It depends if you need a same day appointment, sometimes it’s a long wait in the phone queue to speak to reception. Recently I rang to get a same day appointment and I was lucky to be next in the queue but then I got cut off and by the time I rang back I was 17th in the queue and waited approximately 45 mins. I was directed to the pharmacy which was fine except they charged me £9.65 for eye ointment but I’m entitled to free prescriptions, but because I didn’t have a prescription from the surgery they made me pay for it. I find it pretty easy to book appointments for a later date though both on the phone and at reception.
Suggested improvements
On this occasion my actual time in the consulting room was very helpful and I was asked to make a further appointment in one month. There was only one receptionist at first, and she went into the back office for quite a long time obviously sorting something out for a patient in front of me. Eventually another receptionist arrived to man the desk.
On the previous occasion, regarding referral to the pharmacy as a first step, it’s a great idea to free up GP’s, but it hasn’t been thought through properly for those of us over 60 who should not have to continue to pay for medication.
