It’s very difficult to get an appointment. Receptionist answered the phone but would not make an appointment when we ‘phoned at 8:20. Told us to call back at 8:30. The automated check-in system was not working when I arrived at the surgery and reception was unattended. Although there were several people in the area behind the reception desk, I waited several minutes before anyone acknowledged me. Receptionist insists on asking about why I need an appointment and then decides when or whether I can see the Doctor. I don’t believe that the receptionist is qualified to triage.

Suggested improvements
When patients arrive at the surgery, receptionists ask them (in a loud voice) about the nature of their medical condition. Patients have to reply in a loud voice because of the screens around the reception area. Does everyone waiting need to know that Mr Smith has a bladder infection? Please treat your patients with dignity and let them have these conversations in private with the medical professionals. When I saw the healthcare assistant for my “passport medical” she sat behind a desk with two large computer screens and told me to sit opposite. She could not see over the screens. I was with her for about 15 minutes and she spent 12 minutes of this time typing into the computer. Please treat your patients with respect, look them in the eye and listen to what they say. Administrative tasks can be completed without the patient present.
