I suffer with genital herpes - type two, if you are experiencing your first outbreak, these are really effective to reduce symptoms etc, however, I have had quite a few 6 month courses and the longer you have them the less effective they become. For temporary non frequent use this could be helpful but for continuous long term suppressive therapy, they become less effective as time goes on. I have had this for nearly 4 years now so the best treatment is trying to be healthy now.

I was very late being put onto Aciclovir as my shingles was well advanced before I saw the Doctor. Because I have CLL the Doctor decided to prescribe Aciclovir although later than normal, it was still extremely effective in stopping any new lesions developing. Despite considerable scarring, which may be permanent, the pain is reducing rapidly. Taking Aciclovir was a great relief. Had I been allowed to receive the shingles vaccine when I asked for it, in September, I might well have avoided this second attack of shingles in two years, but I have no complaints about the Aciclovir.
