A core group of regular staff were always caring, compassionate and ready to listen and I felt that they treated me with dignity and saw me as a fellow human being worthy of that treatment. A minority of the regular staff and most of the agency staff didn’t even bother to learn my name and I felt like just another anonymous patient to them which was demeaning.

Suggested improvements
One of the other patients regularly subjected me to prolonged verbal abuse and was physically intimidating. There was no provocation from me. Other patients were subjected to the same treatment from this patient. Apart from escorting me to my room to get away from her I don’t feel this situation was dealt with appropriately. I ended up locking myself in my room for extended periods and feeling it was unsafe to access the shared spaces on the ward. Staff witnessed this abuse on many occasions and rarely intervened nor did they ever follow up by asking if I was okay when I had locked myself in my room.
