Review of St Peter's Hospice - Hospice at Home
16th November 2022

Following my late father's lung cancer diagnoses which was terminal and eventually spread to his bones, I knew at some stage he would require additional medical care, over and above what I was able to provide, as the only next of kin (his daughter). However, he was very clear that he didn't want to end up back in hospital alone. His situation deteriorated over the months to come and suddenly took a turn for the worse during the last 3 weeks of his life. At this point he was under the care of the GP. I moved in with him as his care needs had significantly increased overnight and I was worried to leave him due to the pain and discomfort, not realising that I wouldn't return home to my husband, children and my job until after he had passed. Those 3 weeks were the hardest of my life, I was completely lost and scared, feeling helpless watching my dad deteriorate each day, I had 6 hours sleep in 2 weeks, I did everything for him in relation to his personal care and each day he became more reliant on me. During this time, I escalated his care needs with the GP and community nurses. It was at this point that St Peters Hospice came to my rescue. From the moment the hospice at home team arrived at my dad's door I was on my knees. They were my guardian angels and the first people to ask how I was. They immediately took control of the situation, arranged some rest bite for me and got to work to understand Dad's needs, as well as who he was as a person, they immediately built a rapport with dad and a plan of care and emotional support from that day on. They made us feel like we were the only people in their care, nothing was too much trouble, and they took significant pride and compassion in their work. Whilst they were only in our lives for a week before Dad passed away, they were an extension of our family and my source of support in a moment of need. I will personally be forever grateful and in their debt for enabling my dad to be comfortable at home in his surroundings, passing away with me by his side and the St Peters Hospice team just as he wanted. I couldn't have asked for more, they were simply outstanding! Thank you so much to St Peters and the Hospice at Home team, as well as the medical team and access services helpline, you're all amazing!

This answer was provided one week into patients stay. The staff (all) were excellent and very caring. The facility is so good and the calmness with the calmness with the garden is very helpful. The food was of a high quality.

Suggested improvements
