Review of Nutrition & Dietetics - Inpatient Adult - Royal Berkshire Hospital

I had a lot of contact with the nutrition team but their hands are tied when it comes to dealing with consultants. [name removed] and [name removed] stopped coming round to see me and I had no nutrition for so long. They saw me throughout the 10week stay and were amazing. This stay went so bad because I disagreed with the lead consultant. I didn't see the team and they wouldn't even make eye contact when on the ward. They had an opinion but couldn't share it because of the doctors. They saw me having to restart and we don't know why everytime they replaced the tube or when I got my PEJ and this one. They gave me an unrealistic feeding regime which they knew was unrealistic but they didn't come round and check on me. I thought them to be so much better than that. It's sad to see.

Suggested improvements
Maybe continue talking to the patient and listen to them about what is going on from their view. Not to be just forgotten and then treated like I had leprosy!

They were professional, kind and caring. It was good to see people who really enjoy their jobs. ILike the fact there much laughter between them and their willingness to interact with us patients.

Review of Nutrition & Dietetics - Inpatient Adult - Royal Berkshire Hospital

I met with the dietitian on one occasion when she was visiting my elderly Mum on Burghfield ward at the Royal Berkshire hospital, when I was on a visit there. She was very pleasant and seemed to understand that Mum had no appetite and tried several additional supplements to increase her nutritional intake. She understood the swallowing issue that led to a stent being fitted.

Suggested improvements
Although the dietitian was very good, the nurses on the ward seemed confused as to what was required in terms of level of blending. Mum was often given the level 3 puree menu when she was actually advised by the dietitian to try level 5 moist and minced food. Not sure if this was due to documentation in notes, or nurses not reading up to date notes. Mum did not really understand the whole situation and so would not have thought to ask the nurses herself about having thicker foods.
