I had problems with elbow and was unable to straighten it. X-rays showed arthritis and I was offered surgery. Keyhole surgery with a small cut to the back of arm (which would leave a scar) as well.
The operation was almost cancelled as I was last in, and they were behind slightly on timing. but they did do it. I was also just a day patient, however I did not recover quickly from the anaesthesia so they gave me a room and kept me in for obs overnight. All the staff were very nice.
The incision to the back of the arm was not necessary as during keyhole they found a rogue bit of bone which was causing the problem - about the size of small fingernail!
So using keyhole surgery on the elbow saved me from having a larger scar on the arm, quicker recovery from surgery and less 'aftercare' as I only had two very small incisions either side of elbow.
I was NHS patient but was not treated in a way that made me feel any less valued.
The surgeon, Mr A.D. Yewlett was very helpful in consultation and post op. Friendly, approachable and informative - his time was given without feeling like I was taking up his time. Again he did not make me feel any less valued than a private patient.
