Review of B2 IAAU
19th June 2023

Part of my condition included photophobia and hyperacusis. The noise at times was beyond tolerable even without this and the insistence on turning on overhead lights was akin to someone with a nut allergy having peanuts thrown at them! There was zero understanding in these very real conditions and my pain and discomfort was tutted at or basically dismissed! I was left traumatised, crying and wanting to go home. Staff shouting to each other, doors banging, loud laughing all led me to believe that patients were incidental in this hospital ward. ‘Patient first’ was not evident! If staff want to discuss loudly the problem with paper towel shortages perhaps it can be done in staff meetings and not shouting across patients beds. I don’t want to hear when or where they are going on holiday while I am lying ill in bed. Nor do be I expect to be lied to when a staff member (plain light coloured dress, long blonde hair extensions’) told us the very annoying alarm that had been going off was due to someone pressing a button in the toilet but the toilet was locked so they were having to wait for the patient to come out to reset the alarm- this alarm was going off regularly throughout the day and evening. Amazing that when we complained about it - she managed to stop it within seconds! I also don’t appreciate the volume of her voice, her attitude and silliness when asked to PLEASE keep her voice down nor her insistence on calling patients ‘mate’. Then we have the staff who come into the ward at 5:30am and do nothing but open the doors, blinds, and turn on the lights!!! WHY? It would appear this is a case of “well we are up and awake, so should everyone else”. 5 days in this ward, five days this happened and not a single thing was done for the patients at this unearthly hour. Nothing! I could not wait to leave this ward due to being made to feel the patients just happened to be in the way of staff doing what they wanted when they wanted.

Suggested improvements
A serious retraining on patient first needs to happen! The unnecessary noise in general is unacceptable in an environment where people are poorly and trying to rest! A reminder that the people they are being paid to look after are priority and noise should be kept to a minimum! While I had heightened sensory issues, the other patients on the ward who didn’t were complaining about all of the above when I first arrived which led me to dread being there and they were right. Several staff however were excellent including Matthew who prepares the beds. His manners were impeccable. Also two of the staff nurses were very good too and are to be commended. The food was above par and some better than I’ve eaten on British Airways and on that note I cannot believe my greatest compliment is to the chefs!

Review of Emergency Care Centre DPOW
19th June 2023

Arrived around 9pm, sat waiting until I had my first interaction at just after 11pm, this was for obs, had blood tests and was asked what had brought me to A&E. The lady who was typing was not overly friendly nor did she make me feel welcome. She asked the other lady in the room to do bloods which she did, the lady doing bloods went to suggest offering me a urine test in which I would have thought would be standard due to the nature of my complaint, anyway, the lady who was typing said that is not neccessary. Between 12 (midnight) and 12:30am I was called through to discuss results. The lady DR I saw asked me what brought me to A&E, I explained the nature of the concern and the reasons why, what the issue was and I advised 111 told me to go to A&E. She asked me 3 times if I was sure I was bleeding from the front passage and not the back passage, now I'm no doctor but I know the difference between front and back. She said my bloods were fine although I wasn't aware what bloods they did nor the results, I just took her word for it. She examined me by feeling around my tummy area and I then explained to her that I wasn't sure if I could be pregnant and that I had a suspect ovarian cyst that gynae were investigating and as I fell over then started abnormally bleeding I was concerned if I had damaged something to which she said the ovarian cyst would not have ruptured as you would be in agony and you're not pregnant as your blood test is negative. I asked if what I was experiencing may be implantation bleeding due to the timings of events to which she dismissed and advised that blood tests will pick up pregnancy 5 days after, this is 2/3 weeks after so she just put it down to menstrual cycle. I advised this is not normal for me to bleed like this, unexpected and it was very fresh blood whereas my menstrual blood is dark, she told me I had valid concerns and reasons for being there but as the blood tests are fine there is nothing they can do and maybe go and see my GP. She then offered me a urine test to which I asked what that will achieve, she said rule out a UTI, although she doesn't think it is that, I agreed and said no it's not that as I have had that before. I think she could tell how deflated I felt and offered to get a second opinion by her superior to which I said no it's fine, I've just spent a long time waiting to find out nothing is wrong, it's just frustrating. She then offered to call me the next day to see how I am, I told her not to bother as I was at work all day. I left feeling quite upset and anxious and surprised at the lack of interest and empathy shown. I also felt like I was wasting their time.

Suggested improvements
Try to be more approachable and friendly, I understand this isn't a hotel and is not a hospitality proud sector, however, tone of voice, explanation and delivery of communication is important. I felt like she may as well have said 'go home, stop wasting our time, you're just on your period'. The lady sat in the room at the desk where I had my bloods done made me feel like I was intruding, I am unsure if she was already past her finish time but she didn't have the time of day for me nor look at me when she was speaking to me. The lady DR lacked empathy and understanding and to ask a patient 3 times if they are sure they're bleeding from the front passage and not the back is insulting.

Review of Honeysuckle Ward
19th June 2023

Admitted to Honeysuckle for an elective c-section; something I was very apprehensive about. On attending, I was immediately out at ease by the midwife going to be taking care of me. Received a warm and friendly welcome and all my questions were answered in a kind and professional way. That midwife stuck with me throughout surgery and afterwards. The midwife asked me prior to the surgery if I had any worries - I said breastfeeding afterwards. Well! She certainly listened because afterwards she had such patience and care and compassion when trying to support me and my daughter breastfeed for those first few times. I thought I was going to be a nuisance but throughout I had reassurance that I wasn’t and I was doing great - just the ‘pick me up’ I needed. My pain was so well managed compared to my last c-section. The discharge checks were so thorough that I was reassured I was safe and healthy. I honestly could not recommended Honeysuckle ward enough, as every member of staff on there was just phenomenal.

The food was not particularly great. But there was plenty of it and I did not go hungry.
