My 18m old son was taken into resus and I was made to feel like he didn’t belong in there by one of the nurses and the dr looking after him. It’s fine if he didn’t belong there but it was the paramedics that took him there after being blue lighted due to low sats on high flow oxygen. I was made to feel stupid, as my son was mottled and I had a nurse explaining to me it’s just because he had a high temp (which I get but he has ongoing fevers of 40 + for over a week, already on antibiotics from the gp. And mottling is also a sign of sepsis, I am an urgent care practitioner so felt I was being made to feel silly for being concerned about his mottling.) the dr wasn’t interest in his sats dropping to 89% (history of pneumothorax, chronic lung disease 10 weeks prem) when I told him as he was he was walking past saying ‘it’s positional’ and walked off, they also discussed outside the room that they needed ‘him out’ for a sicker child. At this point I had no idea what was going on and it wasn’t until I got upset to the sister that I felt listened too, Emily was lovely and showed real empathy and kept me informed the whole time. The dr that reviewed him in paeds was also fantastic, as was the hca who asked how I was. These three individuals turned the experience around for us. So Thankyou.

Suggested improvements
The resus staff should be more thoughtful in what they’re saying to people as it’s an anxious time seeing you baby unwell.
