I am answering this survey as a care so some of these tick boxes apply to a patient not a family carer. I would like to add the name of the Care Peer Support colleague [name removed]. My son is in Cove ward and I have contacted [name removed] with various issues and have had a response in an understanding caring manner . I am speaking on my observations when visiting the ward to see my son .I cannot answer for him, as his opinion may be seen differently to mine . When I visit him , I am his mother , I am treated well by the nursing staff and any issues I have seem to be addressed., However with so many different staff on duty each time I visit I assume everything is logged as to get some consistency with my son's care., so I am not sure if that happens. It's good to have a Care Peer Support person to contact as I find this very helpful.

Suggested improvements
We are forbidden from visiting my son's room within the hospital and we are shown into a visitors room. The journey takes over an hour and to have just an hour in that small room is not ideal .The room is very stark. Just one settee and one chair not very relaxing for us or the patient. On the one occasion I was allowed to go to his bedroom as many items of his clothing had gone missing . I was a little upset as on that occasion the room was not at all clean , he had no bedding on his bed, a flat pillow without a pillow case. I mentioned this to [name removed] as he is unwell and I was expecting his room to be cleaned and linen and towels provided . The floor was dirty and his waste bin was also full not just one days rubbish. The laundry bag was full of dirty clothes and linen and I could not find his missing clothing . I was escorted out of the room after a short while..I did persuaded my son to have a shower and change his clothing as his clothing and himself was not at all clean . It's distressing to see him like that in hospital. [name removed] [name removed]innan did address this with the ward [name removed]. I did get a follow up call from [name removed] who said the issues would be addressed. I hope this is not an ongoing issue , but I wouldn't know as kept to the visitors room. I think the nursing staff have a very challenging time and do a good job overall. My son has been in their care for many weeks and looks like a good while longer , I know he is safe in the hospital and unable to care for himself at present as he is very unwell . I can phone and get to speak to nurses and I value this to get updates on his care and progress. I find the Ward round on Meet very beneficial as I can get to speak to [name removed] [name removed] about his care and medication.

Response from Berrywood Hospital

We are really happy to hear that you have had positive contact with the carers lead and we will pass on your compliments to ensure she is aware of this. We will always ensure that patients rooms are cleaned and ensure they have the correct support and I am sorry that on this occasion this was not the immediate case. We will ensure that your son is supported and in a clean environment. You have discussed the care of your son with the ward matron on a few occasions and she will be happy to contact you again regarding this now she is back from leave. Thank you for your valuable feedback. The visitors room based on the ward is sadly a small room but there are plans to review the visitors room and this may support your visits.
