I first attended the Dental Hospital in order to get an expert opinion on a facial deformity caused by childhood cancer treatment. The whole trauma of going through cancer as a child can be incredibly scary, and if that is made more difficult by a facial deformity then you would think it was something the doctors would jump at wanting to fix. As it states in the questionnaire and hospital values charter, you wish to be treated with compassion and kindness. The strange thing about my experience was that until a certain final appointment I was being treated that way, then all of a sudden it changed, and I have no idea why. Nor was I allowed to ask why, it was like in an instant the friendly doctors had become your enemy. The two doctors involved are a Mr Pratik Sharma, and a Mr Michael Millwaters. If you have anything that is very traumatic to deal with I would advise avoiding these doctors. They do not seem to have the empathy to acknowledge how it feels to have gone through what you have with your facial deformity. Instead of trying to address it, along with functional issues of having your jaw fixed they look for reasons to deny you having access to treatment. For me they told me without having discussed why, that I would definitely need access to a clinical psychologist yet I had been seeing a therapist for several years prior to their appointments. He had in fact even written a letter to say we had discussed what would be involved with the surgery and that he stated I was fully aware of the possible outcomes. If I was to offer constructive suggestions it would be to listen to the patient fully, understand what they have been through and suffered, and not assume they haven't had the mental capacity to understand everything. I feel frustrated that despite being 100% transparent about the truth I am now being punished for that because they are trying not to address the true reasons for their lack of desire to do the treatment. My only option I have is to make a formal complaint as every other avenue I have taken seems to fall on deaf ears.
