I wanted to mention Dr Hughes, and nurses Laurie and Stacey. Laurie, we spoke on the phone but you gave me all the time I needed and set me in the right direction. Stacey, brilliant at taking bloods, especially as I have rubbish veins - not a bruise at all. Dr Hughes, you were kind and thorough and listened to me and again gave me the time I needed and moved my issues forward. You have all been professional and supportive so far. Much appreciated, thank you all.
First I must clarify since there is no provision for other than "yes or no" answers. In the absence of success when trying to contact by phone I call into the Beversbrook practice. I have stated that receptionist unhelpful but not factually so. I wanted to make an appointment to see a doctor and she explained that it doesn't work like that anymore, that the call centre upstairs make decisions about appointments. I had problems with my hands. I explained that diagnosis needed visual examination. I was told to telephone surgery from home and speak to call centre staff. I did this, eventually with success was connected and they said a doctor would call me. Doctor did call me. She was charming and attempted to diagnose the condition from my answers to her questions about contact with pets. She asked me to send a photograph of my hands. I was sent a link to my mobile but this did not have facility to access the link; I tried to access the link via computer but it did not work. I gave up.
During the course of our telephone conversation the doctor told me why my Apixaban dosage was to be reduced from 5mg to 2.5mg, this being due to my age, that I weight under 60 kilo and as there are no problems with my liver. I can't say when was the last time I was seen by a doctor at this surgery for blood test or weight; certainly not during the course of lockdown. How can they know my state of health or weight? I don't know what condition my liver is in and I don't know how much I weigh.
The experience has frightened me and I hope I never have to attend this surgery. My friends have moved to another practice but have not yet had any need for attention so I don't know if other local surgeries are as bad or if it is NHS overall which is no longer fit for purpose.
Although I had to use doctor link (which I am not a huge fan of as you have to wait to be contacted and made an appointment for) when I did receive my appointment it was convenient and I didn't have to wait when I got there.
My doctor who I believe was Kathryn Hughes, (I had never met her previously) was one of if not the best doctors I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. She was so calm, conducted and professional yet personable and understanding. She had the best demeanour and really put me at ease with how she conducted herself and how she explained what my worries were. She was informative, knowledgeable and kind, if I were to have 1 doctor for the rest of my life I would wish it was her!
I asked Calne reception about logging onto their services and they could not have been more helpful. I was sent links and passwords etc straight away and now feel I have a better understanding of the online service.
I was supposed to see a nurse in Calne but had a call to change venue to Sutton Benger and see the trainee GP Dr Chinamasa under the direction of Dr Else which was marvellous news as I live in Sutton Benger. The receptionist was polite, kind and very helpful. The apt. was on time. Dr Else allowed Dr Chinamasa to lead the consultation with only a brief reassurance at the end which was for my benefit and much appreciated. Dr Chinamasa covered all the areas I raised with confidence and I feel reassured, progress is definitely being made and I have been asked to book a review apt. in 6 months. The whole experience could not have been better. Thank you all.
