I had a total left hip replacement 2 months ago at Guy's hospital, and I have been very impressed with Mr Shah and his team from start to finish. I was diagnosed as needing new hips some years ago, and when the pain became too great I realized it was past time for them to be replaced. The booking team at Guy's were very helpful, and my initial consultation was with Nasha, a delightful junior member of Mr Shah's team. She was very knowledgeable, and explained in clear detail what was involved. Mr Shah took the trouble to come and meet me, and I was most impressed with his kindly and clear manner. I also liked his praise of Nasha; he said in front of her how she was a valuable member of his team. He was thoroughly professional and reassuring, and gave me great confidence in what was to me a rather daunting prospect. He listened to my concerns and answered all my questions in a manner that put me completely at ease, and made me feel absolutely happy that he was to be my surgeon. As part of the initial consultation I was given an information pack to prepare me for the operation. It was very comprehensive, and included pre- and post-operation exercises, with a very helpful explanatory exercise DVD, and clear guidance on self-preparation for the operation. Subsequently I went to an afternoon's hip school for very helpful face-to-face briefings with OTs and Physios, and they gave me disability aids, as by this stage my hip was stopping me from bending. Before my operation I had been given 4 sessions of hydrotherapy to help to prepare me for the op, and I continued these 3 times a week at my local pool, and at home I did the exercises from the DVD as far as my bad hip allowed. . On the day of the operation everything went exactly as Mr Shah had explained. The only extra thing I would have liked would have been to see Mr Shah in recovery after I woke from the operation, for him to reassure me that everything had gone well. I realise this is very selfish of me, as he would obviously be busy operating on someone else, but as I have previously had to have many operations, including for cancer, to know immediately on awaking that all had gone well would have helped me to relax and settle. In recovery I remember that I kept looking for his smiling face. The nursing and physio staff in the orthopaedic ward (Sarah Ward) were most efficient and helpful, and I had a visit from his registrar that evening telling me that the operation had been successful. When Mr Shah came to see me the next day he explained how well things had gone. I really like his reassuring manner. I was instantly free from hip pain after the operation, and the wound has healed beautifully, with no infection and a very neat scar that is fading remarkably quickly. I had a further consultation with Mr Shah 6 weeks after the operation, and in this review he again was clear and thorough in his explanation of how things had gone, showing me the x-rays of my wonderful new hip in a correct position. I left this consultation completely happy with the treatment I had received, and confident that I would be in excellent hands for my second hip replacement in a few weeks. I have scrupulously followed all the advice that Mr Shah and his team have given me, and I am convinced that doing this has greatly helped my speedy recovery. I most strongly recommend Mr Shah to anyone thinking of having a hip replacement.
