Mr Gella performed surgery on me to repair a non union fracture of my scaphoid bone at Birmingham City Hospital. The surgery was done as a day unit patient and I was in hospital for a total of about 4/5 hours from arrival to going home. Prior to surgery, Mr Gella came and spoke to me about the procedure, the likelihood of success and what was going to happen. I had a brilliant team of anesthetists who looked after me and the staff in the operating theatre were all brilliant. I was a nervous patient (having never been in hospital before, let alone having an operation), so their care was really important in making me feel at ease. The surgery was completed whilst I was awake using a nerve block and took about 60-90 mins in total. Throughout the operation Mr Gella and the team chatted to me to tell me what was going on. I even got to see the in operation x-ray to show me that the Herbert screw was in place and to show me how it all looked before I left the theatre. This put me at ease knowing that the first part of the operation was a success. I had read a lot about the surgery I was going in for before the operation took place, so know that this is a difficult bone to fix in terms of how well the fracture might heal post op. The blood supply to the scaphoid bone is very poor, therefore even if the operation goes well, its up to the individuals ability to heal that will make it a success or not. This was reiterated to me several times and I was even told about what would happen should this initial operation not go to plan and the options that would then exist. It was great being in possession of all the facts. Post operative care has also been brilliant. I was out of a cast within about a month and into a wrist strap, then physio started and I am now 12 weeks post op and have a good range of movement back, I have seen consultants and physios throughout and they have all said they are on the end of the phone if I have any issues. No problem in recommending Mr Gella and all of those who have been involved in my care. Their communication has been exemplary and I never felt as if there was such a thing as a stupid question. My thanks to all of the team for being so professional in their care.
