I presented with hip problems pre-covid. Unfortunately covid meant that I couldn't be assessed. As a result I had significant deterioration in both hips by the time I went on the waiting list for surgery. I ended up waiting 2 years before I could have my first operation and faced many cancellations.
I finally had both hips replaced in April and September 2022, by which time the operations were complex.
At every appointment I attended Mr Marley was caring, positive and informative. He explained exactly what the problem was with my hips, what type of surgery was required, the likely recuperation required and the final outcome. He listened (very patiently!) and addressed my concerns. He was very kind when I was clearly struggling emotionally because of the issues with the length of my wait and the cancellations.
Once I was admitted to hospital, again Mr Marley explained everything clearly. The operation went very well and, despite a difficult recuperation due to nature of my operations, I had no issues with infections, stitches or anything else relating to the surgery. My scars are hardly noticeable. Mr Marley explained the steps involved in my recuperation and why, so that I could understand why he was asking me to do what he wanted.
Mr Marley always treated me like an individual, his decision making is clearly people centered and he made me feel that he genuinely cared.
Having just attended the clinic 8 months after my second surgery - walking and fit - Mr Marley was genuinely as delighted to see the change in me as I am to be fit and healthy again.
I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have my life back, thanks to exceptional surgery by an exceptional caring surgeon.

Mr Marley is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic surgeon who works at The Royal Bolton Hospital and Beaumont Hospital. He specialises in the surgical and non surgical management of disorders of the hip and knee.
He qualified from Queens University Belfast in 2008 and subsequently completed his basic surgical training in Northern Ireland. In 2013 he was appointed to the North West orthopaedic rotation where he completed his specialist training.
In 2018 Mr Marley was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS T&O) as well as the North West Trainee of the year award. He obtained his Certificate of Completion of training (CCT) in 2019. On completion of his training he was successfully appointed to the highly competitive arthroplasty fellowship at the world renowned Centre for Hip Surgery at Wrightington Hospital.
During his two-year fellowship, he received intensive training in the management of complex hip and knee conditions.
He has published book chapters, original research articles and has presented his work both nationally and internationally. He has a keen interest in the implementation of new surgical technologies and has presented work on 3D printing in hip surgery and the implementation of new sensor based technologies in orthopaedic rehabilitation. The latter formed the basis of his Master’s dissertation for which he received a distinction in 2020.
Mr Marley has an evidence-based practice and only uses orthopaedics implants with excellent survivorship as documented by the National Joint Registry.
In 2021 Mr Marley was appointed to the Royal Bolton Hospital and is the medical education lead for orthopaedics. He is responsible for training orthopaedic trainees and he is both a clinical and educational supervisor to junior doctors of varying levels. He has regularly been invited as faculty of specialist hip and knee courses as well as educational courses for trainees preparing for their intercollegiate exams.
