Nightmare anesthesiology experience! I've had several major surgeries so shared my previous experiences with Dr. Marfin when he came to meet me before my hysterectomy. I previously had one post-anesthesia experience where I experienced severe nausea and vomiting and also shared that my body does not at all respond to paracetamol and that oxycodone is effective for post-op pain. He completely and rudely dismissed all my experiences and said authoritatively that paracetamol is as effective as opioids. I tried explaining that it most definitely was not for me and that I only needed strong pain meds for the first 3 days when the pain was the most severe. I have never been addicted to anything my entire life and stop taking opioids as soon as I can after surgery. He refused to listen to me.
I woke up from surgery in complete and total agony. It was torture. The pain was 10/10. Apparently that was not the first time I actually woke up from surgery; they later told me I had come out of anesthesia initially, screamed about the pain, and then passed out. I was writhing in the bed, screaming for help, begging for my husband. I remember them taking blood from my arm for some reason and finally giving me a pain pump. Unfortunately, only a little comes out at a time and I was in so much pain that I just kept frantically pressing and pressing the button because I wasn't thinking logically. Finally the haze lifted and the pain got under control. It was horrendous and something no one should experience in a civilized society with modern medicine.
My recovery from the hysterectomy took several months, whereas I have made speedy recoveries from all my other surgeries. I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of pain management added to my body's trauma and made my recovery longer.
Nine months later, my right ovary burst and I needed emergency surgery. I was terrified to undergo surgery again and was in tears speaking to the anesthesiologist explaining what had happened previously. Thankfully, she actually listened to me and I came out of surgery with my pain managed appropriately. My recovery from that surgery -which used the same incisions as the hysterectomy- was far faster and smoother as well.
It has been over a year and I am still furious at the appalling and barbaric way I was treated by Dr. Marfin. I can't help but wonder how he would feel if he had a few internal organs removed and was given only paracetamol and an anti-inflammatory.
