The abortion left me with complications which later lead to me having to go under general anaesthetic after an A & E visit resulting in severe infection. I had the medical abortion (the two pills). I took the first when I was there and then the second 24 hours later, i started to bleed a few hours after the first. The second pill invoked the most serious agony I have ever felt in my life. I was not warned at all for the amount of pain I was going to be in- over the counter medicine did not help AT ALL. I asked if I would need to be prescribed pain killers but was told no, this was wrong. I was offered a surgical abortion, but I had to wait a few days longer which in hindsight everyone should do as this is agonising and scary to go through as a reasonably young adult.
4-5 days after I started having signs of infection which got a lot worse and I had a fever and intense cramps. After calling 111 I got sent an ambulance to A and E. I had left over tissue in my womb and it was infected and severely swollen. i was not warned at all about this, all i was told was that 3 in 100 abortions do not work with the method of pill taking that I choose to do. 4 days later I had to go under general to have a D&C which is what happens after a miscarriage.
I never received a single check up phone call from Marie Stopes and not sufficient after care at all. They did not mentally or physically prepare me in the slightest for the pain I was going to have to go through and had I not heard stories from a friend getting Sepsis I may not have called 111 and would have battled with serious infection longer. I had to go on two extremely strong antibiotics after which has ruined my stomach. I am traumatised and extremely emotional almost 3 weeks after the D & C and just overwhelmed at the entire procedure.
Avoid Marie Stopes if possible, and have a surgical abortion, the invasive aspect of it is worth it to not have to go through the pain. Having gone through both an invasive procedure and the medical abortion I can testify that it was so much easier to recover from mentally and physically.
