Date October 18 I was diagnosed with low rectal bowl cancer in early February 2018 and have been under the care of The Christie hospital. At the early stage, I was under the care of my oncologist and after careful consideration of the facts and options, I decided to undertake a long course (25 days) chemo and radiotherapy treatment, toward the end of my treatment, my oncologist recommended that I should consider going under the surgical care of Mr Aziz. In parallel to my oncologist, I spoke to a friend of mine that was also going treatment for a similar medical condition and is also under the care of Mr Aziz and who strongly recommended that I should meet with him. On meeting with Mr Aziz it was very clear that together with my oncologist and the MDT team that he fully understood my diagnosis and journey to date, along with all the supporting facts leading up to my most recent diagnosis. Added to this he also showed genuine compassion toward my feelings and objectives linked to all the options. On discussing the options, it was obvious that he was totally open to my choices and provided all the supporting answers to my long list of questions; he explained things in a easy to understand way rather than just speaking and using his medical language. He even went onto draw multiple sketches of the surgical options and discussed things in great detail, until I was happy to take everything away and make my own decision. After careful consideration of the facts, I decided that a permanent colostomy was my best option and underwent surgery in mid September, leading up to the operation Mr Aziz was there to answer any questions and to explain the procedure for both pre and post operative surgery. Following my surgery he was again at my bedside to explain what happened during surgery and to advise on recovery steps. Pleased to say that I have since made good progress and left the hospital after only 7 days and I’m now recovering well at home. Mr Aziz is a true professional that is totally passionate about everything he does. He’s a very good communicator, compassionate and always makes his patients feel at ease. I also experienced his strong leadership when amongst his “fantastic” support team that has total respect for him. I was surprised and very pleased to see him at my bedside early on Saturday and Sunday morning to check on my progress and also to tell me to take things slowly, recovery is not a race! His goal was to help make me cancer free and very pleased to say he achieved his objective! I will now have a six weeks post operative appointment and then will go onto six monthly clinics. I can’t recommend Mr Aziz strongly enough and it goes without saying his fantastic team to anyone unfortunate enough to be going through cancer.
