I first met Mr Aziz in clinic at the Christie following a course of chemo after a previous operation for a bowel tumour.I had been told I needed the operation previously and Mr Aziz took over my case.It was,for me,a frightening prospect as the operation would mean a long time in theatre and another period of recovery.Mr Aziz explained again in detail what would happen in a calm way,he was aware of my nervousness but took his time to tell me this needed to be done.I didnt feel hurried,his easy manner calmed me and I knew this was what I needed to do.I was admitted to hospital and the preparation began,I had a stoma which Mr Aziz had said may or may not be reversed depending on what he would see during the operation,The following morning as I was waiting to go into theatre he came to see me and said 'If I can reverse the stoma and you had to use the bathroom a few times a day how would you feel?I told him to go ahead.When I woke in CCU surrounded by equipment I was so well looked after by the staff.Mr Aziz visited me and said all had gone well..he monitored me while in that unit and when I was transferred to the general ward did ward rounds most days.He was so friendly and easy to talk to,asked me how I felt,I wasnt aware at first that the stoma was gone!He never seemed rushed,had time to chat,always asked if there was anything I wanted to know.He explained how he had been able to reverse the stoma,I was so grateful,it had given me my life back.. On ward visits Mr Aziz , even though he must have a heavy workload, would take the time to check how I felt,checking with staff how medication etc was going even encouraging me to look at the stoma wound which I had avoided!!! The important thing is that he spends time with you and encourages you to get better by discussing your recovery.I was lucky enough to see him in Clinic last week for 6 month review and happily all was well. I can't thank him enough for my care.To sum it up Mr Aziz is a top class surgeon who makes time for his patients when they are presented with worrying situations and importantly he listens,reassures and all in a professional but friendly way.
