Having had a right hemicolectomy in 2012 under the care of St Marks in London I underwent a splenic flexure polypectomy in August 2021 when a colonic sessile polyp was removed piecemeal. The biopsy revealed a well differentiated adenocarcinoma and it was not possible to determine if all the carcinoma was removed. Because my location in Cheshire is so remote from London I decided to seek out a more convenient hospital for my future care. I was fortunate to have a meeting with Mr Aziz who had obtained my history from St Marks and agreed to take over my care. Mr Aziz explained to me that as it was not possible to be sure that there was no residual cancer following my previous procedure that the only way was to eliminate this scenario by having a left hemicolectomy. In other words to remove most of my remaining colon. I was uncertain about following this route as obviously it would affect my quality of life but Mr Aziz said that it should be possible to connect my small intestine to my sigmoid and over time the frequency of bowel movements should settle to a manageable level. I should emphasize that I was not under any pressure to adopt this procedure as I could choose to do nothing and instead have frequent colonoscopies. On balance, the left hemicolectomy seemed the best option and this was carried out by Mr Aziz on 20th January 2022. Following the procedure Mr Aziz explained that the intended laparoscopic procedure could not be completed as intended due to a complication involving my previous right hemicolectomy and a surgical cut was necessary. It is now 6 weeks since my operation and the initial pain/discomfort is subsiding to a point where I can see some sort of routine emerging with my bowel habits. I have a review with Mr Aziz in August by which time I am confident that my quality of life will be much improved. I have the utmost confidence in Mr Aziz with regard to his understanding of my situation and concern for my best interests, and also his professional expertise in his chosen field.
