In the 1970's I had a serious rugby accident resulting in a number of operations that left me with restricted movement of my shoulder and pain if I over exercised it. By 2014 I had constant pain and could only sleep by taking strong pain killers. I was referred to a local shoulder orthopaedic consultant to review what treatment, if any was possible. Following an X-Ray, MRI and arthroscopy, it was discovered I had acute arthritis of the humours head and lack of specific muscle groups. It was decided that my complex case should be referred to a board of shoulder consultants to discuss the best course of treatment. The result was that out of around 12 consultants only Mr Gupta was prepared to review my case with the possibility of surgery to address the pain rather than living with strong painkillers for the rest of my life. On meeting Mr Gupta I was immediatly impressed with his positivity and honesty. I had further Hi Res. X-rays and MRI's and a number of consultations to understand what options were available and how we would approach them together. While reviewing the issues and options available from a surgical and physical perspective, Mr Gupta was also accessing my phycological state and my approach to not only the operation, but how I would cope with the long rehabilitation journey. We agreed together that the surgery was the best option and that I would cope with the physical and mental road to recovery. The operation was a risky complex procedure that was outlined by Mr Gupta, he then went onto explain each stage and the risks involved, but also giving me the confidence that from a surgical perspective he could deliver the results required. It would then be up to me to fully support and embrace the rehabilitation process to provide the real results the surgery could provide. I was so committed to MR Gupta and his skills in completing the surgery successfully, that I retired early from my work so I could commit on a full time basis to the physiotherapy and rehabilitation. The surgery was a Zimmer cement less shoulder replacement, that was the easy bit according to Mr Gupta, followed by a reconstruction of the Rotator Cuff, other muscle groups and debriding of tendons/ligaments. Two years later and my rehabilitation is complete, I have more movement in my shoulder than I have had in 40 years and more importantly there is no pain. Mr Gupta has given me back my life and will be eternally grateful for not only his commitment and leading edge surgical skills, but the way he treats you as a person and not just a patient. After two years of consultations, I feel that he has become a friend rather than my consultant. I am now back cycling, skiing and in the Gym twice a week, although I am not sure he would approve of the skiing and cycling! I do remember his parting words on my last consultation. "I have given you a Ferrari and not a Land Rover, so please treat it like one! I have nothing but praise for this outstanding surgeon. Thank you
