I was in great pain at times, particularly in the night, with a suspected tear in a ligament in my right knee. I was referred to Mr Heaton at the Fitzwilliam Hospital, Peterborough and he confirmed the diagnosis. He recommended angioplasty which is keyhole surgery to repair the tear as soon as possible. I was admitted for daycare surgery within a short space of time. The operation was done very quickly, the anaesthetic was good and didn't leave me feeling "hung over". I saw Mr Heaton both before and after the operation. It is well worth having this operation because if you follow the advice of Mr Heaton and the physiotherapist you will make a good recovery and feel much better than you have for a long time. But it is vital to follow the advice which is: don't stay in bed and don't just sit around. You need to move the knee by pottering round the house. Do a bit and then sit a bit. That way you won't lock your knee. I'm not one for doing exercises, but again they are important. They may seem boring, simple even, but they make a great contribution towards a full recovery. Please be patient too. Whatever your age, the knee swelling will take time to go down, at least six-eight weeks (and not a couple of weeks as one leaflet told me!). I am very pleased with the operation Mr Heaton performed and I am very happy at the extent of my recovery six weeks after my op. I have more energy than I've had to a long time!
