I would like to share my experience of a total hip replacement at Heatherwood Hospital in June 2021. Mr El-Husseiny was my consultant. Gratitude and thanks for his expertise and explanation of the procedure, seem somewhat inadequate. From the consultation during COVID, the pre-op consultation and the after care, all have been exemplary. The anaesthetist too deserves praise for enabling me to make an informed decision over my choice of anaesthetic; I had absolutely no concerns. During my out patient appointment last week, Mr El-Husseiny added me to his waiting list for the same procedure on my right hip; I have 100% confidence that again, I will be singing his praises! In terms of what to expect post op, this may ally fears for potential patients. I haven't experienced much pain at all, pain relief once home was negligible. My outer thigh is still slightly swollen after 2.5 weeks but not tender to the touch. The front of my thigh does not yet have full sensation possibly due to the nerves still healing. For the first 48 hours, I was unable to move my leg when lying or sitting - it was like a dead weight. Once on my feet however (within a few hours of the op) I was able to walk with crutches and the physio; 24 hours later, I was walking to the bathroom unaccompanied. As advised, I have walked most days increasing from 10 minutes to an hour. Some days I feel tired, so rest on my bed when necessary. I invested in a helping hand which has proven invaluable for dressing. You cannot reach forward and down so need to adapt your routine and daily tasks. For the first couple of days I used a tall stool in my shower in-case I felt wobbly; this was soon discarded. You can however only shower if you have someone able to take off your support stockings and replace them. After a week or so, I was able to cook meals, deadhead plants at waist height and feed the cats using my helping hand. Obviously, I paced myself and listened to my body but was pleasantly surprised at how much I could do. Two and a half weeks later, I still use a raised toilet seat, use an office chair at the dining table as it has arms, put a pillow in my sons car if I go out and have doubled the cushions on a sofa. I can walk downstairs 'normally' one foot after the other, but going up the stairs, I still go one step at a time. I stopped using a crutch after week. My restriction is lifting my operated leg to the stair above where I am standing - this is my weakness but am doing exercises to improve this. The staples were removed after 14 days by the practice nurse; aside from some slight stinging, the procedure was pretty painless. I
