I broke the left Humerus Head in several places, and also my right Wrist in three places. I was initially taken to Pinderfields Hospital for emergency care and then quickly seen by the orthopaedic department (Mr Matthew Varghese). All consultations (pre- and post-operative) were good with both Matthew and Josh (a Registrar) taking ample time to listen attentively and react with care. At no time did I feel rushed or as if there were some time limit (although I have no doubt there was). The operation was tricky as I had to have two surgeons, one for my shoulder and another for my wrist, but Mr Varghese took control of the whole process and organised for the operation to plate and pin the breaks in both my shoulder and wrist under the same operation, but with the two surgeons arriving at different times. The operation itself went well, especially my shoulder which was operated on by Mr Varghese, and I now have more movement in the shoulder than I was led to believe than I might get; in fact - almost normal movement with no pain. On coming round from the operation I was in a significant amount of pain; so much in fact that I was put back to sleep for some hours (something may have gone wrong with an anaesthetic 'block' that should have prevented this). However, once I came round and for my first (and only) night in hospital I was well taken care of by a person called Bippin, who was normally part of the orthopaedic outpatients team, but had volunteered to do some time on the ward so that he got a full picture of what the patient goes through (I thought this was exceptional and another sign of a very well run department). The orthopaedic department at Pinderfields hospital was superb. Every appointment was on-time, and for once (in my experience) the hospital ran to a very slick process, with me the patient being sent to different departments (bloods, scans etc), but with very little wait at each stage, and the whole experience being what you should expect (but rarely get). These comments span all (several) appointments at the orthopaedic outpatients clinic. In summary - I commend Mr Varghese, his team and Pinderfields Orthopaedic department.
