After a fall, causing quite serious damage to left arm and elbow, Mr. Phadnis, and his assistant surgeon Peter Cay, performed reconstructive surgery 7 weeks ago. Problem aggravated by long-term rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis and medication I take. I am 80 years old and a thin person, with small bones, leaving little room for manoeuvre when inserting metal implants. I was impressed by Mr. Phadnis's swift analysis of the problems and clear, brief explanation of the operation and potential risks. I had an immediate impression of his competence which gave me confidence. His manner was calm, meticulous, friendly and that of a man quietly on top of his job. The operation was done early, giving me plenty of time to recover (general anaesthetic). Felt very well after the procedure and was home the same day, to my amazement. The wound recovered extremely well, no hint of infection, and the reconstruction was seen to be 'perfect' upon x-ray yesterday. Mr.Phadnis was clear about the degree of mobility I can expect and how much I can use the arm now. And I'm surprised at the extent of normal use I now have. I was also impressed by the fact that Mr.Phadnis told me he would give me an open appointment in case I do develop any problems, going directly to him. I don't expect to need this, but it is good to know that the possibility is there. I've never known a doctor offer this before and indicates real commitment to his work, to his patients, over and above what would normally be required. I am very grateful that I happened to be treated by such a skilful, dedicated surgeon. I could not have wished for better. Also impressed by the organisation in the dept. on operation day. The system was well designed and worked like clockwork. The staff were kind and very helpful, all of which helped to calm my nervousness. My thanks to them all. Excellent follow-up since operation, with Physiotherapy in Haywards Heath.
