Mr. James Gibbs leads a skilled and caring team of orthopaedic health care professionals. All the staff in the hospital that have looked after me have been quite simply exceptional and outstanding. Mr Gibbs replaced my right hip 4 weeks ago and I have to say the treatment he provided has been transformative and his skill, care and attention has been central to that. If you are considering having this treatment, like me, you have probably put it off for longer than you should. I suggest you commit to it and get it done under Mr Gibbs care and you won't look back. I'm off to ride my bike today and am looking forward to going on a long country walk at the weekend - something I love to do that I've not been able to do for a few years now. Thank you for giving me back pain free mobility Mr Gibbs!

I had a total hip replacement three weeks ago. James was highly recommended by one of his fellow orthopaedic surgeons as ‘the best there is’ and he has certainly lived up to his reputation. In addition to his surgical expertise, he has a lovely manner which inspires confidence and he takes the time to answer all those questions one inevitably has when facing a procedure like this. I have made a very swift recovery and just three weeks on am not taking any analgesics, am walking a mile happily without crutches and returning to my normal routines, which include looking after our five-year-old granddaughter and our two gundogs. I couldn’t recommend him more strongly and am so glad he was able to fit me in.

Mr Gibbs performed a hip resurfacing operation for me 6 weeks ago today at the Nuffield Haywards Heath, and I am already extremely pleased with the result. This was the first operation I have had for over 20 years so I was nervous, especially when I was told that I would have a spinal injection in order that I could have just a light general anaesthetic. The spinal injection (preceded by a local anaesthetic) did not hurt at all, which was a huge relief. Mr Gibbs explained everything that I was expected to experience both for the operation and afterwards. This description could not have been more accurate, which I have found to be extremely reassuring. I was on my feet the same afternoon of the operation and able to move about on my own on crutches within a day. Upon discharge from the hospital I was given stronger painkillers in addition to ibuprofen and paracetamol. I did not have to take a single one of the stronger painkillers, and stopped using the ibuprofen and paracetamol within about 3 weeks. I reduced to one crutch within just under 2 weeks and ceased using the crutches at all within a few weeks. At 6 weeks I am able to walk long distances (this past weekend I walked about 10 miles one day, followed by similar distances over the following few days) without any pain or even any discomfort. For the past few years I had been in constant pain, and to be free from this now is wonderful. Everything has gone extremely well in respect of my operation and so I thoroughly recommend Mr Gibbs expertise.

James Gibbs is the surgeon other specialists go to themselves! He is not only the consummate professional, but a highly skilled human being- able to weigh up the patient and to relate well with his team. I am no stranger to major surgery, this being my 9th operation, but all went really well under James’ care and expert hand. He talked me through decisions about my needs as well as reporting clearly afterwards on what he found. The speed of recovery has pleased and surprised me. With his blessing I was able to attend important events at some distance after only two weeks. His encouragement to make that my goal helped me to focus on the exercises and go for it. It’s comforting to know that he specialises in both hips and knees- so I know where I will choose when the next joint dictates. Warm thanks to him and to the whole team.
