A good surgeon needs to do more than be technically capable. They should exude confidence, listen to the patient, consider alternatives, engage the patient in decision making and put any risks or adverse aspects into perspective. Mr Carmichael succeeds on all counts. My surgery was of course routine to him, but a one off for me. As a patient I presented a specific and unusual anaesthetic challenge and this too was handled sensitively and efficiently by Mr C and the anaesthetist. I am likely to need a further op in due course and have no hesitation in working with this surgeon. And finally, I am in less pain and more mobile than I had anticipated. Put another way, I couldn’t have done that without him.
