I have been working with Mr. Atkinson for almost 5 years now. I first work with him as a scrub nurse at BMI Cavell Hospital and now I assist him with his procedures at London Bridge. As a colleague, who has been a part of his surgical team in various roles, I have witnessed how he has been with his staff in the different theatres. He is the type of surgeon who, as a colleague takes time to know his team, talks to them and calls them by their first name. I can still remember on my first day on his list, with his loud, chatty voice he started asking me questions, saying words in my dialect, then started sharing stories and jokes as we go along with the heavy list (4-5 major procedures in a day). This made the long day of work better and made the entire surgical team felt at ease. He also appreciates and commends a job well done by anyone in the team including the porters. To anyone who is humble enough to treat everyone in the team as valuable has my highest regard and respect. If one great surgeon can show respect to his subordinates and values them, how much more can he do to our patients who plays the most important part in our profession? Yes, I would recommend him to anyone even to a family member.
