I was apprehensive when I went to see Mr Spink because I had been experiencing sciatic pain for 10 weeks and I felt that it was getting worse, I also had some altered sensation in my calf and parts of my foot that I was concerned about. I had been told that sciatica was self - limiting, normally subsides after 12 weeks and that there is no magic wand to speed things along. I had been prescribed stronger and stronger analgesia that did help but I felt wretched, tired, nauseated, low in mood and I thought I must be making a big fuss about nothing as sciatica apparently is a fairly common symptom. Mr Spink had the results of my MRI scan, he showed me on the screen that I have a synovial cyst which is causing some compression and hence the pain. He was so professional, calm and efficient, his explanation of the condition and the treatment options was concise, easy to understand and not in the least bit patronising. He reassured me that my appointment was justified and that I wasn’t making a fuss or wasting NHS resources as I had feared I might be. I felt 100% reassured that something can be done, having a diagnosis and knowing the cause has helped me manage the pain more effectively and I feel totally safe under the care of Mr Spink. I valued Mr Spink's professionalism and effectiveness, it was what I needed in the first instance when I really wanted his reassurance, but as I was leaving, with my questions answered and a plan in place, he was so kind and wished me well, I really appreciated his genuine compassion, for me it came at the right time in the consultation. I prefer not to be overwhelmed with compassion initially, I appreciate that everyone is different.
