Born with hip dysplasia a day before the commencement of the NHS - 4 July 1948 - it went undiagnosed until a third x-ray in November 2022 and subsequent consultation with Mr David Artwright at RHCH Winchester in February 2023. After a scan and a further consultation - were I was amazed at the extent of hip dysplasia and damage to the hip - we mutually decided that subject to further professional assessment that a hip-replacement was the only permanent remedy. The operation was undertaken on the 27 July 2023. Prior to entering the operation facility Mr Artwright meticulously ensured that my physical position was comfortable and sustainable for the duration of the procedure. I was conscious throughout the operation and was relaxed and pain-free. The outcome is an examplar of a surgeon's approach and skill together with the whole 'Trauma and Orthopaedics Team' and supporting staff - a huge success for Mr Artwright and the NHS in its 75th anniversary and a wonderful transformation for me: no limp; no nagging persistent pain; both legs of equal length despite a previous disparity of 1 and half inches; being able to stand correctly for the first time; a substantial improvement in my mobility and well-being for which I am very grateful. Just wish an intervention had occurred much earlier in my life - but better late than never.........!
