Having suffered knee pain following what had seemed to be an innocuous gym injury, investigations revealed that I had suffered a meniscal tear in addition to having full thickness (Grade IV) cartilage loss of the medial patella facet. I was then referred for arthroscopic surgery, following which my knee began to recover with conservative management. Four months post-op, however, I was still struggling with inflammation which, despite steroid treatments, refused to settle down. Nine months post-op, discussions turned to options such as articular cartilage repair, sub-chondroplasty, platelet rich plasma and even partial knee replacement. I researched various consultants and met with Mr Gupte to obtain a second opinion. I liked the fact that Mr Gupte worked in both NHS knee care as well as in the private sector, and also that he has a conservative approach to treatments. He carefully considered my history, clearly communicated his examination findings and recommended hydrotherapy to break the cycle of pain, stiffness, swelling, patellofemoral dysfunction and muscle weakness which I had been experiencing. An MRI scan of my other, pain-free knee supported the idea that cartilage loss was not the main problem. I felt that I was in good hands. Two months of weekly hydrotherapy allowed me to finally begin physiotherapy. A further fourteen months of regular, tailored personal training has enabled me to build up the muscle loss around my knee sufficiently to carry out all daily activities. Improvement in muscle tone continues and I now feel confident that I will be able to return to sporting activities such as cycling and even some gentle skiing during this year. My 18-year-old son has now also been under Mr Gupte’s care for a rugby injury which caused complex tears to the lateral meniscus. Mr Gupte patiently explained the options and, although recommending surgery, he did not pressurise for a quick decision. My son commented that Mr Gupte listened well and explained everything clearly. Hence, my son had full confidence in Mr Gupte’s suggestions and 100% complied with the rehab advice. Five months later, his knee seems strong and stable. For all the above reasons, I can highly recommend Mr Gupte.
