I have been very happy with the service that I have received from Mr. Kolias. When I first met him I had received the shocking news that a brain lesion had been discovered 10 years previously, and that I had not been informed. I was understandably very upset about this, and it had shaken my confidence in the health service. This was of course not Mr. Kolias’ fault, but I was impressed by his positive communication to me over the phone about this, including apologising for the earlier miscommunication. He immediately arranged for an MRI scan, and replaced a phone call appointment with a face to face one. I was reassured and admired his caring approach. He discussed the results and possible treatment options with me carefully and considerately; and I felt that I agreed to go into surgery fully prepared. Unfortunately there were multiple cancellations – in fact the operation was cancelled 7 times before I was finally admitted to the theatre on the 8th attempt. Throughout this though, I was impressed by Mr. Kolias, who kept in contact. In fact every time I went into the hospital and waited to be called into theatre, Mr. Kolias came to see if I was ok, and that I’d seen all the relevant people prior to the operation. In my experience patients with other consultants, also waiting for surgery, had no visits from their consultants at all. As soon as the operation was over, he rang my mother, who understandably was extremely anxious, to reassure her that all had gone well. He even got me to say hello to her – I have no memory of this, but she was so pleased to hear me. It was so thoughtful to think not just of me, but of the wider family too. The day after the operation, he came to the ward, and gave me positive news about the operation. And I was released from hospital after four nights. I have just been back for my first appointment with him post-leaving hospital, and he is very happy with how much I have progressed. I still have two very small lesions, and he wants to keep appointments every 6 months to keep an eye on these. Despite the good news about the operation, I had been anxious about this, and now feel reassured that I can get on with my life. He also listened to any concerns I had, and answered all my questions thoughtfully and with clarity. Throughout this whole process, he has been sympathetic and empathetic, and has explained clearly the medical issues and the treatment options that are available to me. I don’t think I or anyone else could have had a better or more understanding warm person as Mr. Kolias. Thank you.
