My teenage student son had vision problems and thankfully was sent to Addenbrookes where the MRI showed a collection of blood under the skull threatening his vision and putting dangerous pressure on his brain. He was sent straight to prepare for surgery. Fortunately Mr Kolias was his consultant. Mr Kolias found a very quick way to explain to me and to my son the scope of what we were dealing with in a way that worked for each of us. This meant we both stayed calm on the emergency neurology ward whilst we waited - as other even more dangerous cases kept arriving by helicopter and had to be done first. Mr Kolias came and presented his treatment plan to us both, showing us the images from the scans and explaining the options he had been weighing up. He also wrote to my son’s academic tutor to explain the likely impact on his exams which put my son’s mind at rest about his studies. There was always a sense of calm when people were around Mr Kolias. It was clear that he leads a neurosurgery team with real strength and depth that has smooth productive relationships with the eye doctors and radiologists at Addenbrookes and with the nursing staff on the ward. So I felt very comfortable with any member of his team conducting the actual operation. After a week on the wards you learn that it’s all about the teamwork. The thing that would have improved our experience would be more beds for neurosurgery at Addenbrookes - then we wouldn’t have waited for the emergency surgery.
