A few months after I completed a long and gruelling period of chemotherapy and radiation treatment at the Royal Marsden Hospital, I realised I no longer possessed the mental resilience and stamina to bounce back and resume my normal life, which included running a successful business. I was trapped in a downward spiral of stress, anxiety and lethargy. I knew if I let this continue much longer it would have disastrous consequences for me and my whole family. I needed help. I first sought help from the counselling services available to Royal Marsden cancer patients. From those initial consultations, it became apparent I had long-standing and deep rooted mental health issues, which merited further investigation by a psychiatrist. I was referred on to Dr Woolley. Dr Woolley is an excellent diagnostician who, after only a couple of face-to-face meetings and the completion of some comprehensive questionnaires, was able to identify what lay behind my immediate issues and devise an appropriate course of action. In my case, this involved a combination of medication, to cope with for a clearly defined mental disorder and counselling sessions with a therapist to help me deal with issues from my upbringing. Six months on, I am back working every day, coping well and starting to move forward with my life once more. I owe Dr Woolley a big debt of gratitude because I know I could never have got to this point without his help. I should also single out for high praise Kristin McCarthy, my counsellor, who I continue to see on an ongoing basis. So, big thanks to Dr Woolley and Kristen McCarthy.
