I first met Dr Mayet when I moved to Witham 2008 and I was lucky enough to get him for a check up appointment. At the time I was a heavy smoker and drinker living life like I was bullet proof, Dr Mayet wasn't judgemental but did point out benefits of a cleaner lifestyle. I did take this on board and gradually reduced the drinking and smoking until I stopped smoking and drank within recommended limits. Come 2011 and my partner (now wife) was pregnant and I had just failed a medical for life insurance due to breathing and I was only aged 36. Dr Mayet was amazing and ran a couple of tests in an appointment that pointed towards COPD, but due to my age he didn't just pass it off like that, as others would have, but he chose to do some further tests. One blood test down and he had identified that I was suffering from a rare genetic issue that meant I had no protection in my lungs. Dr Mayet spent time investigating the condition and was able to identify a leading consultant at Addenbrookes that would be the best person to refer me to, so in 2012 my journey started. Throughout my journey with Alpha 1 Antitrypsin Deficiency Dr Mayet has always been there for me, he has been central to getting me the right care at the right time, when times have been hard he has supported me, given me advice and helped look for alternatives. I know that Dr Mayet is only a phone call and that is the most reassuring a sick person can have, and that he also cares about each one of his patients. When I have bumped into Dr Mayet outside of work he has been the person who has initiated contact and always been happy to chat about how things are, what's been happening but most importantly what he can do for me. That is a true mark of a person that honestly cares for his patients. I had my transplant at the end of November 2023 and was discharged just before Christmas. I hadn't had time to inform the surgery due to the Christmas period but I got a phone call on 27th December 2023 at 19:00 from the surgery, which was extremely odd. It was Dr Mayet to say that he was covering someone else's shift but had just seen my discharge notes from The Royal Papworth and he was so pleased that I had had the transplant. I was taken aback that he would be that happy for me and willing to contact me out of hours to offer support and see if he could help in any way. My transplant journey has been bumpy but with Dr Mayets help and care he has reduced the bumps into little hiccups, I know that I can call the surgery and he will respond, or get a message back to me very quickly. In a time when GP's are extremely hard pushed to meet their targets he makes it 100% clear his target is his patients health and he will do everything that he can do to make sure they are all getting the correct care for their conditions. I feel extremely lucky to have Dr Mayet looking after me as he is more than I would ever expect from a GP
