Being 75, fortunately very fit, energetic and competent, I have some personal difficulty with being addressed as "sweetheart" or "Darling" by someone I don't know and who doesn't know me. I feel this is ageist. I was so addressed in my first telephone contact with the hospital. I am always very careful in the way I address strangers myself. That's why the question, "Were you treated with dignity and respect," loses one star for me. However, that probably says more about my personal pride than about the hospital. I know there are probably many patients who would find this manner of speech warm and inclusive. In every other respect the service at Hartswood hospital was first class. It was very clean; the Staff who had contact with me were pleasant and considerate; the facilities were excellent; my clinician seemed satisfied that everything he needed was provided. I will recommend Hartswood hospital to anyone whom I meet facing eye surgery.
