Have been in and out due to gastro-intestinal issues whilst I wait an inordinate amount of time for the colorectal team. I appreciate the NHS is hard pressed, underfunded and under-resourced, so in the meantime it is in and out like a yo-yo until I get my investigations. The first time on A&E I was poked and prodded and sent home with no pain relief and just a few suppositories (after a GP referral, not a mere walk in - I couldn't walk and was vomiting.) They gave me more laxatives having spent months on laxatives that don't work. When the same thing, an impaction happened again, I was kept on ATL ward for a week. Here, the staff were amazing. So kind despite my embarrassing conditions. I could not have asked for more during a terribly rough time. Next time (2 months later) - Because we are still 'treading water' until my colorectal investigations, it happened again. This was around December. The A&E staff were atrocious. They had no idea what to give me despite my history being in front of them. The stood around the nurse's station and made fun of me for my bowels and intestines not functioning - like I was an 'old woman.' I'm 26. They joked that "I know what you'll be drinking over Christmas, and it's not sherry!" as they gave me more laxatives that didn't work and released me without helping me clear my back end to allow things to push through to give me more time before my malfunctioning intestines block it up again. They neglected to check I had even been to the toilet. They gave me a home enima (without any further help) and joked that I was a 'waste' of their time... As in, toilet waste... Very embarrassing. When they asked questions, after my response, one dr said sarcastically, "well, that's your problem to live with, isn't it?" Then I had to go to Kemp Welch on January 30th and I need not have bothered. I was sent by the GP because prolonged medication whilst I await investigation has caused chemical imbalances which required drips etc, and another blockage clearance. The staff were rude. I saw the dr once for an enima which didn't work and never again. I saw the nurse twice, once to do the enima and once when she threw me and 4 other gastro patients out, untreated with discharge letters. Mine said I had been to the toilet. I hadn't. They didn't address the chemical imbalance, no pain relief, no aftercare and it wasn't just me. They left two other ladies in agony and discharged them untreated and left someone crying behind a curtain for hours. They left my vomit on the floor and despite dehydration I had no water or food besides a biscuit all day, (I also suffer with anorexia so that was not helpful.) Now GP has to yet again pick up the pieces. I am left now feeling embarrassed every time, and I now harbour a great mistrust for that hospital other than the amazing staff on the ATL ward. If not for me, sort yourselves out before someone else suffers like I keep having to! I don't want a defensive reply either. Just don't bother!
