Review of Bicester GP Out of Hours Service written by a patient
29th July 2019

This was an awful experience - and a huge waste of time! IF “I want great care” I will not be returning to the Bicester Community Hospital First Aid Department! In this review GTW is Gail Turner-Williams. I have two broken toes, both stubbed. After a long wait from 6pm when they should have been open, GTW appeared in the dark Reception Office, made no acknowledgement of me waiting, switched on lights and computers and disappeared from view, took a phone call from a colleague stuck in traffic (and told them “Oh poor you - no rush”!). Despite having been the only patient waiting, I was finally assessed at 6.45pm. GTW was completely lacking in empathy or indeed respect. Even once I was called through for assessment I was treated to her rear view and the back of another member of staff facing their computers and exchanging complaints about the log-in being slow. - I was told off for not going to my GP because “this is not the right place for you to come”. - I was aggressively questioned as to why I did not visit my GP as soon as I injured my foot (the answer was I had to go to London to babysit two grandchildren and this was the first chance I had to get help). - I was told off for wearing flip-flops as they offered no support for my toes, even though they were the only shoes I could get on. - The two staff members sniggered that I had declared an allergy to Ampicillin, GTW saying “I haven’t even heard of that for years!” - GTW offered me a choice of Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. I chose the latter and when she finally brought it she then said I shouldn’t have it if there was any chance my toes were broken, which she had not yet pronounced upon, so went off and got Paracetamol instead - Having waited almost 50 minutes before she had logged me in the computer, faffed about with painkillers and beakers of water, discussed whether the cleaners had been or bins had been emptied and whether all their Admin was up-to-date GTW finally sat down and poked my feet, asking me to rate the pain from 1-10, 10 being the worst. When I said “12”, instead of grasping that I meant it was very, very sore, she humourlessly said, “I’m sorry, I need a number From 1-10”, at which her colleague sniggered. - Having assessed my foot and named every bone in the toes, she said I would need an X-Ray for which I would have to go to the JR or The Horton. She said the notes she had taken would not be transferred to either of those hospitals and I would have to start the whole process from scratch. She then said I should not walk in my foot and offered me crutches or a wheelchair. This was a miserable experience, GTW acted as though the Community Hospital was her own little empire in which she should be allowed to work as slowly as she liked and treat patients as an inconvenience . By the time I left there were other people waiting and I could see how easily the waiting room would fill up if everyone was treated to the same slow and laborious process, with information being logged at a snail’s pace and patients being ridiculed. The following morning, being unable to go straight there due to childcare issues, I went to the Horton A&E where I was treated with courtesy, professionalism, respect and kindness. I was told I had broken one toe vertically and one horizontally and I should try to elevate the foot wherever possible.
