I am a runner and have suffered with osteoarthritis of my big toe joint since an impact injury just over three years ago. An x-ray revealed that bone spurs had grown around the joint, restricting the movement. Mr Harb explained the options open to me and their pros and cons, and answered my questions patiently. I opted for a cheilectomy procedure to remove the bone spurs. Mr Harb explained what I could expect in the weeks and months following the surgery. The operation went smoothly and the following two weeks were pretty much as expected - all spent sat with my foot elevated. From then though, my recovery advanced much faster than I expected. I was able to walk 1km on a treadmill only 16 days after the operation. I did my first run (2.7km) 22 days after the op, and built up to 5km four weeks post-op. This is apparently much earlier than is common after this kind of procedure. I will exercise caution and limit myself to short distances for several weeks yet though. Mr Harb insists my quick recovery must be due to a disciplined attitude to rehab on my part, but I think most credit must go to him for his excellent surgical skills. For anyone suffering with bone spurs and considering a cheilectomy, I cannot recommend Mr Harb highly enough.
