In June of this year I was fortunate to be referred by the NHS to see Doctor Al-Hakim at Holly House Hospital This appointment followed ten months of pain to my right arm and shoulder. The ultra-sound results had not been transferred but, following a thorough examination, the doctor was able to explain exactly what the problem was. He spoke in language I could understand taking time to draw a diagram of the shoulder pointing out where the tear had occurred and the reasons why I was in so much pain. I was diagnosed with a Rotator cuff partial thickness tear. A possible operation was mentioned but I was offered a steroid injection to ease the pain. It was explained that this did not work for everyone and the arm would feel heavy for a few days before I felt the benefit. Dr.Al-Hakim was extremely patient and asked if I would like time to think about this or discuss with a friend. Despite being rather apprehensive and a little afraid I trusted him. The injection was given within minutes (no waiting, much to my relief). I asked him to talk to me so that I would not be aware of the time it took etc and he obliged. This really helped and was not as bad as I thought it would be. Time was given for me to relax and take some water whilst he typed a letter to my own GP. This gave information not only regarding treatment but also that he would be willing to see me again at Holly House should I suffer in the future. I was advised to encourage my GP to refer me back as he would be willing to see me as an NHS patient. I felt extremely grateful and reassured by this very calm and kind specialist.
