From the first time I met Mr Thiruchelvam at Charing Cross Hospital and all though the pre-operation period and the operation itself (which I opted to have as a private patient) the care I received from him was impeccable. He is very easy to talk to and told me what my options were, and what the surgery and treatment would involve, clearly and empathetically. Doctors with his level of communication skills are not all that common. He was patient and careful throughout the whole process and, post operatively. I was able to go home the same day, have not had to use strong painkillers and am recovering well. It is obvious that he is extremely interested in his work and also has research interests, which I found reassuring, and I completely trusted him. The whole team both at Charing Cross and the King Edward VII hospital were excellent as was Mr Thiruchelvam's practice manager who ensured the various appointments went to plan and was very helpful in following up minor issues. I think it is also significant that the other staff, at both hospitals clearly liked and respected him.

I have just completed breast cancer surgery with Mr Paul Thiruchelvam. My whole experience has been utterly amazing. After a rather daunting diagnosis in the NHS at Charing Cross Hospital, I telephoned Michelle (Paul's PA) on the same afternoon. From this point on I felt extremely well cared for. Michelle's efficient organisation of all my appointments meant that I did not, at any moment, feel panicked about being able to book all the scans, tests and surgery in as soon as possible. Amelia (Breast Nurse) has always been there, either on the phone, or at Edward VII, taking care of me, answering endless questions and calming any slight pre op nerves. Paul's approach to surgery was so thorough and considered that I felt extremely confident that I was in the best hands.

A huge thank you to Mr Paul Thiruchelvam and the breast cancer nurses who supported me along the way - Orla, Heather and Bernie. The team provided second to none care from when I was first diagnosed with breast cancer to post surgery. I felt Mr Thiruchelvam genuinely cared about the outcome and I always felt supported and assured that I was in safe hands. Paul took the time to take me through all of my options so I understood what was available to me and the benefits and risks to each procedure. I have had great results from the surgery itself - the cancer is out and the scarring is minimal. I am really happy with how my breasts look aesthetically too. It's been an absolute whirlwind of a ride and I am extremely grateful to Paul and the team for making everything happen so quickly, from the initial scans and testing to IVF and surgery - all within the space of a few months! And while it was a scary time, Paul and the breast cancer nurses made everything feel a little better.

After the shock of diagnosis, everything was ‘plain sailing’, thanks to the wonderful skill and care provided by Mr Paul Thiruchelvam, his team and the courteous patience and efficiency of his PA, Michelle. Mr T carefully explained everything to prepare me for the operation, including the aftercare. His quiet confidence and reassurance helped to remove any sense of panic. My bilateral mastectomy went ‘like clockwork’. When I awoke from the anaesthesia, I had no pain and needed no painkillers. I recovered without the slightest hint of nausea. I was discharged from hospital the next day, feeling relieved and at ease thanks to Mr T and his team. The loss of my breasts is the necessary pay-off for removing high-grade cancers. The Magtrace injections prior to the procedure indicated that my lymph nodes were clear. I would not need chemo- or radiotherapy. I urge all women, whatever their age, to trust in the superior knowledge of consultants, like Mr Thiruchelvam, and DON’T panic! Go for it - you won’t regret it!

What an excellent doctor. Immediately I was reassured when listening to his explanation of my particular breast cancer. He was approachable, good mannered and direct. I asked if I could see my x-ray on his screen. He took the time to draw examples of his suggested treatments for me and to ask questions. I felt totally relaxed with my examinations whilst he drew on my breast - and he gave off an attitude of complete confidence related to the procedure that was going to take place. I would have been so disappointed if I had been given another replacement surgeon. To date all is going well and all looks successful I cannot wait until the stitches and plasters have fallen away. Which may I add, makes the whole experience a little exciting to view my newly shaped breasts. minus the cancer cells. Brilliant work, plus to add to the whole experience the kind and helpful MacMillan nurses too.
