I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my left breast at the end of May. Mr Thiruchelvam was clear and calm in explaining what type of cancer I had. Having had all of the various scans, I met with him again and he gave me a few options for treatment and made his recommendation. It was a very difficult decision, not knowing what to do, however, he and my specialist nurse helped me along the way and I felt confident I had made the right decision. I had a left breast wire localised wide local excision, sentinel node biopsy and bilateral mammoplasty. The time leading up to the operation was very scary, particularly the morning of the surgery, however, Mr Thiruchelvam and his team made me feel as calm as possible. He explained what they were going to do, how long it would take and what would happen afterwards. I was very sick post surgery and Mr Thiruchelvam and Mr Leff came to see me late in the night, making sure I had enough fluids and was made as comfortable as possible. The following morning, he checked on me again and told me I could go home. I was anxious about going home so soon, but he reassured me that I would be fine. I had a follow up appointment earlier than expected as Mr Thiruchelvam received the the pathology report early and did not want me to wait another week. He was again clear and compassionate and told me the results were the best we could ask for. With plenty of rest and doing the recommended exercises, I have recovered well. I have had to go into the breast clinic a few times with pain under my left arm, and each time Mr Thiruchelvam has either attended or been aware of my visit and helped me with what I should be doing. I feel very fortunate to have been treated and cared for by Mr Thiruchelvam and would highly recommend him. I would also like to acknowledged the care from his team and the rest of the Breast Services team who are truly amazing at what they do and looked after me so very well.
