I had a minimally invasive hip replacement operation under the care of Mr Apthorp almost six months ago and for most of the time I have completely forgotten I have had the operation, other than to enjoy walking and living a normal pain free physical life once again. I would say at around four and a half months this became commonplace. Both Mr Apthorp and his team looked after me extremely well during the short period post op. Speaking as the patient, the operation was a remarkably straightforward procedure and an hour or so after the op I was eating my lunch. Because of the restricted movements and general post op recovery during the first six weeks I would definitely advise care in the home two or three times a day for an hour or so in order to assist with food preparation cleaning etc. I also think it very important to realise the recovery is pro active on the part of the patient. A good physiotherapist will provide a changing schedule of excercises which are fundamental to the continuing healing and strengthening of muscle tissue. At six months I continue on a daily basis with the excercises and imagine I will do so until a full year has passed. For me during the first three months there were the occasional days when I might find progress either stood still or on some occasions retreated. I was assured this was normal. Speaking to other patients I found it was quite common to feel anxious about progress from time to time altgough it seems to me that most seem to take it in their stride and these moments quickly fade. I think it is probably a good idea to talk to others such as family or friends or a physio about any anxieties you may have during the first three months so as to relax and enjoy the period of recovery which from my experience has brought about full normal mobility and as a result a new found freedom and youthfulness. Everyone I guess is different in terms of expectations but I would certainly like to think I will be riding my bike long distances, playing golf, swimming (which I have been doing for quite sometime) and various other physical activities. I hope this helps.
