I had a gastroscopy using Xylocaine nasal spray at Braintree Community Hospital. The doctor and nurses explained the procedure and were kind and patient. Although I was warned the spray is quite uncomfortable I personally found it very painful. I was talked through the procedure and liked seeing what was happening on the screen and didn't feel any discomfort from the endoscope as it was happening. The nurse afterwards explained my results. What I am unhappy about though is the after effects. When I have previously had a gastroscopy (through the mouth) there were no after effects. I was eating lunch within a couple of hours. This time my throat was very sore for the rest of the day, my nose blocked and I felt generally unwell. The sore throat lasted over 24 hours and I had sticky phlegm in my throat. I would not have a nasal gastroscopy again.

Response from Dr Syed A. R. Tipu Naqvi

Dear patient, Many thanks for your feedback. The symptoms or the after effects you have mentioned (specially blocked nose) are most commonly seen in patients with sinus congestion. My advice for you is to try steam inhalation at least a few times a day to clear the sinus congestion and this will soothe the back of your throat too. Best wishes.
