Dr Peter karpati was my anaesthetist on 2/11/2018 . I explained I had deep veins and so sometimes it was difficult to find a vein. He said he was experienced and it would be ok. He started to find a vein on the back of my hand but couldn’t find one so he then started to slap my hand to see if that bought a vein up. He continues to slap my hand quite hard actually and when I said that hurt he just continued , he then got the nurse who was also in the room to squeeze my arm whilst he continued to hit / slap my hand very hard. He then gave up and decided to see if he could put the needle in my wrist . He just pushed it in without any care and didn’t even care that I yelled out on pain . After the operation and I was back in the hospital room my wrist was so painful I asked the nurse to take the line out , the pain in my wrist is still bad 3 days later and the bruising is very bad . I can’t even put my watch on my wrist as it’s so painful. Not a good experience, actually worse than the operation itself .

Response from Dr Peter Karpati

Thank you for your feedback, which unfortunately I have only seen this morning. I do check the website at least twice a month, however at present we get no notifications when a new review is posted. Let me turn to the substance of your opinion; first of all I hope that the bruising is now a distant memory with everything fully resolved. As anaesthetists we insert cannulas on a daily basis, does this mean we are never challenged? Of course not. As in your case, sometimes we need to search for veins which is much preferable to just poking around with a needle, in the vain hope of a chance hit. Talking about which, yes patting the hand will help veins appear, however no one would ever countenance causing distress like you have described. Prior to inserting the cannula on your wrist I did explain and prepare you for an uncomfortable experience, as the area directly above the palm of your hand is extremely sensitive. I didn’t "just pushed it [the cannula] in without any care“, I advanced it, but definitely not carelessly. Would you have preferred that I stop the successful cannulation and look for another vein? Prior to going back to the ward, I did come and check in recovery how comfortable you were all round, which you were. Of course, I fully agree that the pain/bruising can become apparent later on. That is why like every private patient I treat, together with the small green card directing you to feedback on this website, I gave you my personal business card with my mobile phone number and multiple email contact details. This, as explained then, was to enable you to contact me should you wish to do so. I understand this is your choice and respect your decision not to do so then or since. Thank you once again for providing your feedback, which I will incorporate into my practice going forward. Kind regards, Dr Peter Karpati
