I have just spent 10 hours from 6pm till 4am trying to get my wife seen after gp sent letter and request to have iv antibiotics. I knew it would be busy but the chaos. Lack of communication and total lack of basic care was stagering. In a nnd e we waited patiently for over two hours while the Police literally dumped somenoe intoxicated and mayde on Spice or some other drug. He was known but not one nurse/medic came in to see. He looked out of it and half naked. Next we get through to a corridor where we wait over 7 hours. Now during this time no drinks were offered, no nurse or other person came to ask are you ok and only one person came and said its a long wait or apologize. Basic skills were missing and as a nurse of over 30 years i was shocked while we waited. There were elderly patients not in a position to get a drink and complaining of feeling dry. My wife who was the patient asked for a drink and we got one at 2.00 im the morning. Many staff seemed resigned to the fact that this is how it is and I got the sense this was normal. Finally we got a bed and i could not believe my eyes of a mixed ward of young and old. I thought mixed wards had gone long ago. I believe this hospital is good for planned appts but a and e and its basics are missing. 1. Communication. 2. Basic nursing care. 3. Leadership which in my experience comes from the top was invisible. 4. Information about whose in charge and what is happening. I have no doubt the staff care and give everything but the very basics were lacking lazt night
