Review of Emergency Department written by a patient
2nd August 2016

Saying what is 'great' about this service is just not a possible option. If you want to genuinely know when/why the service has been less than 'great' you should ask that question too. Having had 4 recent visits to A&E, 2 I would rate as satisfactory, 1 as very good and the most recent as frankly distressing and not one to be repeated. Let me tell you why: The waiting time sign said one and a half hours. This changed at no time, and the reality was actually 3 hours. Be honest, don't mislead people. We don't mind waiting, but don't mislead or lie to patients. Two people who came in after me, one of whom had the same gall stone problem as me, was seen before me. This patient was also offered medication whilst still in the waiting room, which she declined, and she didn't appear to be in much discomfort. I however was struggling to breathe in addition to the pain, but was offered nothing. After the two patients I refer to were seen before me I could stand the pain no longer and left with the intention of going home. I was in no fit state to drive and my husband brought me back. In the ten minutes or less that I had left the department, both of the other patients were seen by a doctor and discharged. I can only assume they needed no treatment and were well enough to go home. I however was still struggling to breathe, the key symptom I now know of an infected gall bladder. That said, I don't think it was appropriate for the doctor I saw to say: 'If you stop the silly panting the pain will go away'. I was in too much pain and stress to even respond. His name I believe from my discharge sheet was Dr. David Aitchison. A very empathetic male nurse who administered my morphine was also treated dissrespectfully by him, in front of me, this was rude and uncalled for. I hope and pray not to have another gall stone attack, and certainly wouldn't wish an infection like I suffered, on anyone. I was I felt grudgingly given some antibiotics by this doctor whom I hope never to encounter again. I expect I will have another attack until I can face surgery, but I can assure you that I will be getting on a ferry to the mainland if it uses up my last breath. Patients should feel safe in their local hospital, not vulnerable, or an inconvenience. Not all the staff are thankfully like Dr. Aitchison, and he could certainly learn some 'people skills' from some of his staff. The department waiting room was also filthy. There was food all over the floor within inches of the receptionist, and general filth on the walls and skirting. I feel I am lucky to escape alive. I don't presume my complaint will be treated as anything other than the rantings of a dissatisfied customer and fully expect to find a black mark against my name should I be re admitted, but for the benefit of those patients who haven't got the strength to complain, it does at least make me feel better that I have aired my views, hopefully so others may benefit in the future.

very quick to be seen even tough there were a quite a few people in front of us the staff were lovely and made us feel at ease It would be nice if the waiting area wasn't so open as when you feel really unwell it is horrible sitting opposite people but appreciate this would take some thinking about and may not be practical
