Inpatient experience/clinical care and hospitality/administrative side of the hospital are like night and day. Every aspect of the care I received as an inpatient was excellent from the moment I checked in for my lumpectomy to my departure the next day. Humane and compassionate as well as professional care from every nurse on the ward, the consultants that I encountered around my operation. Could not have been bettered. However, the hospital admin feels unprofessional and occasionally chaotic. It starts with the lack of acknowledgement when queuing at reception on arrival, given that there are often three staff sitting on the other side of the glass. This could be so easily fixed if the admin team was more patient-focused or with a designated greeter - coffee shops manage this with no problem - why not a private hospital? My pre-op assessment was administratively chaotic with my online questionnaire (uploaded the day before) apparently lost. Two days later I received a call from the bookings team that I needed to give another blood sample as "one of them was rejected". I immediately worried that my op would be cancelled or something was wrong. I asked why and was told that it was because one of my blood samples had been labelled incorrectly. Not what I wanted to hear three days before my lumpectomy. This is all about soft skills/communication style - but when you're feeling vulnerable as a cancer patient, and very focused on an upcoming operation, it makes all the difference. I feel that the administrative side lets the hospital down. Some fairly simple process tweaks and more patient-orientation through training would fix this. It needs to inspire the same confidence as the outstanding clinical team.

Very efficient, clean and tidy facility with the most wonderful staff. The brilliant breast cancer team saved my life and I will be forever grateful for the warmth and kindness they gave me whilst I was in their care.

Sent to the hospital by the NHS physiotherapist for urgent treatment on my knee. It was made very plain to me by the Spire specialist Mr Richards that I was an NHS patient in a private hospital. I was given a cursory examination and told to go away and take Ibuprofen. When I asked why my knee was giving out and I was falling over I was told it was just a symptom of arthritis and to take Ibuprofen and live with it.

£300 WAS PAID FOR MY HUSBAND'S HEART CT. THE NURSE ARRIVED 20 MINUTES LATER, NO APOLOGIES. NO AVAILABLE ROOM TO PERFORM THE CT, SHE INVITED US IN A COLD UNHEATED ROOM IN DECEMBER, MY HUSBAND AGED 87 WAS SHIVERING WHILE THE CT WAS PERFORMED. TOTALLY BEGINNER NURSE, COULDN'T DECIDE WHICH WAY TO HOLD THE EQUIPMENT, HAD TO CALL SOME HELP. AND IF YOU THINK THAT WAS ENOUGH INCONVENIENCE THE BEST PART WAS THE RESULT, WHICH WAS DUE FOR NEXT DAY. NO TELEPHONE CALL FROM THEM, I HAD TO CALL, FIRST THEY COULD NOT FIND OUR NAME, CALLED AGAIN IN THE AFTERNOON, THE RESULT WAS LOST, FOUND IT ONLY NEXT DAY. THIS IS WHAT YOU CALL PRIVATE SERVICE WORTH £300????

The whole team at Spire Portsmouth were friendly and efficient from the entry with COVID procedures, the reception team, the specialist nurse in attendance at the consultation and the radiographers and ultrasound doctor. The 'One Stop Shop' tests were well run, prompt and I was informed about each stage by the consultant beforehand. I was physically supported to the various rooms for tests by the nurse and radiographer who guided me through the process. This support ensured that it was not a stressful experience. I would be pleased to recommend this hospital and team to others.
