Review of Emergency Care Centre SGH
28th July 2021

Considering how busy the department was my daughter was very well looked after.

Suggested improvements
The only thing was being able to access the Church Lane car park from A&E there wasn't a clear way of getting to it without having to take my daughter out of the street late at night.

The wait time was extremely long considering we were told to take an ambulance for our 1 year olds head injury. It was over an hour and a half before anyone even looked at her while I sat panicking trying to keep her awake in the waiting room.

Suggested improvements
You just need more staff and definitely a more efficient A and E department. All the other patients I saw were angry and frustrated that no one was being seen in a timely manner.

Staff went above and beyond they noticed I was a young worried adult by myself (as I was told nobody was allowed to stay due to the pandemic) so regular came over to check I was on while sat in the waiting room. As soon as I deteriorated they offered me a room by self where I could relax and not feel as anxious they truly went above and beyond

Suggested improvements
Allow 1 person to stay with each patient as some younger people had 2 adults with them which isn’t fair, I was still worried and anxious and could of done with a familiar face even though I am in my 20’s,

Reception staff were courteous and helpful

Suggested improvements
Having attended with a foot injury, I was expected to take an extremely painful walk to the treatment room and then to X-ray. Some support to get me there to ensure no further damage would have been helpful

I arrived at Grimsby a&e with an ankle injury in which I was carrying a bag with a boot that I have been given days before and an ankle that was quite visibly swollen and bruised. I was walking on crutches and could not put any weight on the foot, when I arrived there was a queue to get into a&e, completely understandable in the current climate. The walk to a&e itself for someone with an ankle injury was ridiculous, luckily a gentleman squired a wheelchair and dropped me off. I was then left to stand balancing on one leg for over 25 minutes. Breaks and injuries then got called through and I had to wait a further 15 minutes to get into a&e. By this point my whole body was shaking and I was crying out with pain due to having my whole body weight on one foot for this amount of time with a very clear ankle injury. Countless members of staff passed me in this state and did not offer any help, once I got through to a&e luckily again another kind gentleman rushed a chair to me as he could see how much I was struggling. I was shocked that I had been left in this condition. I then had to get myself to the fracture clinic which is another long walk. By the time I got there I was absolutely exhausted and shocked at the lack of support that had been offered to me. It was clear that I was suffering badly and the lack of compassion from staff members in a&e was shocking. Staff in the fracture clinic were very helpful and understanding.

Suggested improvements
I understand in the current climate that it is difficult for hospitals but to not be offered a chair to sit on or a wheelchair to assist me was shocking. I was not allowed anyone in to a&e with me and so support from staff members is key. For people with painful and physical injuries the walk to a&e is not good enough. After the experience I’d had and 3 hours in hospital trying to get back out of the hospital with a cast on was another challenge.
