The system actually worked for me this time, as I had been pre-warned that you have to call at 8am on the dot as the appts will be gone if you wait any longer.
It can be very difficult to get an appointment unfortunately. On this occasion the surgery contacted me to arrange an appointment

The electronic screen to record my arrival was not working properly.
Checking in with Receptionist upsetting as initially she said my appointment was 9:30am, but later acknowledged it was indeed 9:45am
Making the appointment was tricky: putting surgery number on redial and calling exactly at 8am I was still number 21 in the queue!
